Associate Professor Deborah Lutterschmidt wins award for comparative endocrinology

The International Federation of Comparative Endocrinological Societies has awarded the Grace Evelyn Pickford Medal in Comparative Endocrinology to Deborah Lutterschmidt, UCI associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. Given just once every four years, the honor recognizes the achievements of early-to-mid-career comparative endocrinologists. Lutterschmidt accepted the award in early September during a joint conference of the European Society for Comparative Endocrinology and the International Society for Fish Endocrinology held in Faro, Portugal. In addition to receiving the prize at this event, Lutterschmidt delivered the Grace Pickford Medal Lecture, one of the plenary talks of the meeting. “I am deeply honored to have been selected to receive the Pickford Medal,” she said. “The field of comparative endocrinology allows us to understand how animals interact with their environment and how those interactions are, in turn, influenced by different environments, phylogenetic relationships and perturbations such as climate change. This recognition further inspires me to lead the next generation of scientists in probing the frontiers of these questions in comparative and behavioral endocrinology.” Lutterschmidt researches the mechanisms of life-history transitions in reptiles and amphibians, specifically the environmental, neuroendocrine and metabolic factors that mediate seasonal changes in reproduction, feeding, migration and stress biology.
