Media Tip Sheet: Electoral Count Reform

A bipartisan group of senators announced legislation aimed towards preventing a replay of the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection. The proposed legislation assures that the vice president’s role in certifying electoral votes is purely ceremonial, raises the threshold of objection to one-fifth of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and includes other election security and integrity measures. Eight Senate Republicans signed up as co-sponsors, which suggests the proposal stands a good chance of passing.

Faculty experts from the George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management are available to discuss the legislation:

Lara Brown, professor and director of the Graduate School of Political Management.

Todd Belt, professor and director of the Political Management program at the Graduate School of Political Management.

Casey Burgat, assistant professor and director of the Legislative Affairs master’s program at the Graduate School of Political Management.
